A select group of White House staff reviewed and removed documents from the Central Files to be placed in the Special Files. White House Special Files, created in September 1972 to provide a central storage location for materials considered sensitive for either personal or political reasons. Alphabetical Name Files, where materials were filed alphabetically and cross-referenced by an individual or organization name.
Subject Files, with 60 basic subject file categories arranged alphabetically.Staff Member and Office Files, when materials were sent in bulk by staff members and offices.White House Central Files, the main filing system used by White House staff members and offices to maintain non-sensitive records The major types of Presidential materials are as follows: At the end is a listing of materials owned by the Richard Nixon Foundation, on which the National Archives provides reference services. The donated materials are divided into donations from Richard Nixon, donations from the Richard Nixon Foundation, and general donations, and then alphabetically by the collection name. The Federal records are arranged numerically by record group. The PRMPA materials are arranged alphabetically by surname or office name. Textual materials are arranged according to the legal mechanism governing them: the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act of 1974 (PRMPA), Federal statute, or deed of gift. Nearly all processed collections have a finding aid with more information about a staff member or office and the collection those collections have links to the finding aid on this website.
